Happy birthday to me! I gotta admit, turning 50 is a big incentive to start eating right. I spent the first 10 years of my life growing up, the next 10 fighting my weight, the next 20 having babies, and the last 10 growing fat and lazy. It’s my plan to spend the next 10 growing strong and healthy. If I like that, I just might keep it up as long as I can!

This morning I set some wheat berries to sprout for bulgur. I need to find a more local source for wheat berries. I used to drive about 40 miles one way to find them, but since I’m not down that direction anymore and loathe one-item trips, I need to find something closer. I also put a couple cups of rice to soak in water to which a couple tablespoons of buttermilk had been added. Later in the week I’m going to need some pecans, so I put those to soak before bed. I’ll roast them in the morning.

This method of cooking requires some organization and forethought, for sure! That’s okay with me, I’ve never been one to look in the pantry at 4PM and figure out what’s for dinner. As long as I have a computer and a calendar program I can organize what needs to be done when in order to get the meals on the table. It will be nice to have some relishes done and set aside, ready for use, though.
