In cold weather, even the best hydrated among us can get chapped lips. The petroleum-based lip balms readily available in the store aren’t something I want to put on my body, but more natural versions can be pretty expensive. Making your own is easy and you can customize your recipe to suit your needs. Here’s how I do it:
Ingredients:
3 parts grated beeswax (can be found at craft or health food stores)
5 parts room-temperature liquid oil
OR
1 parts grated beeswax
3 parts room-temperature solid oil
You could use avocado oil or olive oil with the first recipe, and coconut oil with the second. All three are very skin-friendly and don’t dry out your lips in the long-term the way petroleum or glycerine-based products can.
Procedure:
Melt the oil and beeswax together in a glass measuring cup sitting inside a pan of hot water, stirring frequently. Take it out before the last of the beeswax is melted, and just stir. You don’t want your formula to be so hot that it melts the tubes. When cooled a little but still liquid, pour it into tubes or small pots. Let the tubes stand upright overnight before capping and packing into purses and backpacks.
If you use a lot of lip balm, you probably won’t need a preservative. If you’d like, a couple drops of GSE (grapefruit seed extract) per batch is all the preservative you need.
I have used this same recipe and added herbs or infused the herbs into the oil before hand. Once or twice I’ve added a touch of natural color. About a year ago I made a batch for my daughter in a small tin that had been used for mints. It tasted so minty and good that she licked her lips and defeated the whole purpose of the lip balm!

Oooh thanks for this recipe — I am going to try it one of these days when I have some downtime.

So how do you add natural colors?
This could save me huge money – I pay about $5 a tube for Bert’s Bees lip shimmer right now!
Thanks for joining in!

There is natural coloring in health food stores, but I like just a little grated beet. You can really control the color by adding just a few drops of the liquid. Orange is done the same way with carrot. Of course, putting colors like that in requires GSE as a preservative.

I think I am going to try playing around with making lotions and lip balms. Making my deodorant got me excited about the whole process

We made lip gloss at my daughter’s birthday party a couple of years ago, went out for dinner and the dog ate it all from the kitchen table while we were gone!
It was great while it lasted though!

my year without
Love it! Thanks for sharing. I haven’t used Blistex or anything like it in years, but in the cold, windy weather, a girl’s gotta do something to keep her lips nice and moist!
I’m not sure what you used for the coloring, but I would attempt to use a drop or less of the natural food coloring they sell at whole foods or co-ops.
Thanks!

This looks lovely. I have found, however, that following a Weston A Price-style nutrient-dense diet with lots of good fats keeps my lips soft year-round without using any lip balm ever. I used to use balms all the time but after my boyfriend told me they actually end up dehydrating the lips, and I noticed I wasn’t using them much anymore anyway, I just stopped altogether.

I use lip balm very rarely since starting to take cold liver oil and oil butter capsules. I believe the drying effect of most lip balms comes from the use of petroleum and glycerine which draws moisture from the deeper layers of the skin onto its surface. They can be addicting!

I agree. I also take cod liver oil and eat lots of butter. I have many other flaws, but my lips are perfectly soft!
