Here’s a great option, a backyard garden designed for you and delivered to your door!

Gardens to Gro will customize a garden with bunny and gopher-proofing, automatic watering and either 12 or 20-inch raised beds, prefab them and deliver them to your door. If you have always wanted a vegetable garden but aren’t handy with a hammer and saw, this could be an option. They are rather expensive, but beautiful to look at! I’m going this week to look at the models available at my local Sam’s Club to save on shipping.

I can see this in my yard!

Dear Brain,

I understand you automatically reaching for the popcorn and cokes at the movies night before last. It’s habit, and reassuringly familiar. You took note of how swollen my hands and face were the next day, and that’s good. Associating the ill effects of poor food choices is as important as associating the healthy effects of good food choices.

But let’s talk about your food choices yesterday, shall we?

Skipping breakfast before grocery shopping wasn’t the wisest decision. True, I didn’t send you a hunger message, but you could have been prepared by packing a snack in case our timing was off. Your choices for a healthy meal at home were extensive. In the car your choices were neither healthy nor plentiful. Driving past Sonic, McDonalds and Hardee’s was wise, and I commend you for that. Chick-Fil-A was a reasonable place to stop for a bite, and your choice of a grilled chicken breast on a whole wheat bun with lettuce and tomato was better than some other options you had. Thank you for skipping the waffle fries and soda, hydrating me with some Kombucha tea was a wonderful gift.

No, there was no way for you to know that your houseguest bought supper for the family at Subway. You didn’t have to drink the diet soda she got you, and I really wish you hadn’t. And after church, when she came home with three bags of groceries full of extruded, sugar-laden cold cereal, GMO corn and soy chips, low fat sugar reduced cookies for your children, diet soda to stock your fridge and Mint Chocolate Silk Pie, I think you showed admirable verbal restraint. Yes, I know my tastebuds jumped in ecstasy at the smooth, sweet chocolate of the pie. But the toll I exact on you this morning will hopefully give you pause.

Do you feel that pain in your knees, back and hands? Perhaps you had forgotten what my arthritic joints feel like when they are attacked. They are hot, swollen and red, stiff and painful. Don’t worry, your cane is in the corner by the front door where you left it months ago. It will help hold me up until I am able to get rid of all this junk floating around. Do you see those dark circles under your eyes and feel the sinus headache pushing on your face? There were an awful lot of allergens in that food and I’m working as fast as I can, but it’s going to take some time to get through this overload.

Life is full of choices, Brain, and for the most part you do a pretty good job of keeping me safe. I appreciate you not taking up bungee jumping or skydiving, for example. I’m sorry to cause you pain, but I hope these messages I am sending you come through loud and clear. We have made such strides together lately, and I was just beginning to heal and work the way I was supposed to before this latest salvo. Please, please reassure me that this is not a new trend, that we can go back to how things were.

With great respect,
Brain

Dear Body,

(ow) Message received. (ouch) I feel awful. (ugh) I will work much harder on (oof) restraining myself. Please heal quickly and I’ll (ow) be more careful.

In Atonement,
Brain
