I am always cautious about anything new and relatively untested whether a pill or injection going in to my body especially for a mild infection. Practically everyone that I know who has taken a flu vaccine has reported feeling ill after it including 2 people who frequent doctors regularly. I say “no thank you.” Best advice is to keep up your immune system and follow good hygiene and common sense.

Nobody is talking about the Chinese who just completed a clinical study of 117 people with swine flu. They were treated with only Chinese Herbal medicine and 75% were completely cured.
Chinese herbs are natural, inexpensive and very accessible from Licensed Acupuncturist all over the country. The proved effective in treating and eliminating the SARS virus a few years ago and they will also prove themselves with the Swine flu.

One of the reasons I love blogging, Twitter and Facebook is the demand for questions like this to be examined. Yes, there have been several inquiries: Obama Foodorama lists several reports from early in the year that raise this very question. Food Renegade has written a well-researched piece with numerous links leading you to evidence that this was an expected outbreak of "when" not "if". I don't think it that far off-topic at all. And I am disappointed that the discussion has moved off the "how" and onto the "fix" so quickly. Sure, a fix is good and necessary, but without examining the how, the fix will likely be no more than a band-aid.

This may be a little off topic but I have a question. Has anyone, governmental agency, activist group, etc., looked into how the factory farms may have contributed to impending swine flu epidemic?

I’m not planning on getting vaccinated. I’ve never gotten the flu vaccine but my husband does. I’ve never gotten the flu, but my husband has, even in years when he’s been vaccinated.

As someone who works in the Allied Health Professionals Department, in close contact with preschool aged children every day (and in a hospital setting), I’ll most likely get the vaccine. I didn’t get the flu vaccine this year (mostly because I hate needles, and I’m not sold 100%).

But Health Professionals are at huge risk- simply due to the amount of exposure to sick people. I admit though, that the daily ‘H1N1′ update that we get via email isn’t quite helping my feeling of security. We even got a checklist that we’re encouraged to go through each morning before entering work… to make sure we’re not sick ourselves.

I have even heard rumours that the school boards are considering delaying the beginning of the school year due to concerns regarding Fall influenza interacting with H1N1…. (Nova Scotia Canada).
Crazy.
I think you’re right- running full tilt into this entire experience isn’t quite the best idea. This has been a nice reality check for myself- a breath of fresh air (that isn’t completely ‘no vaccine!!!’) during this crazy time.
